I had heard a lot about the museum, but during 지신밟기 it was my first time walking inside. I knew I needed to go back, and I finally went because a friend asked me to go with them. I think the best way for locals to visit the museum is to go with a friend! 

안녕하세요, 저는 풍물놀이 좋아하는 미진입니다! 많이 듣고 궁금했던 박물관이었지만, 지신밟기 때 처음으로 그 안을 걸어봤습니다. 꼭 다시 가야겠다고 생각했고, 결국 친구의 제안으로 다시 갔습니다. 박물관을 방문하는 가장 좋은 방법은 친구와 함께 가는 것이라고 생각해요!

In the US, i first learned about Korean comfort women to Japanese soldiers when I was in college. We screened a film called <Silence Broken: Korean Comfort Women> directed by Dai Sil Kim Gibson and got to meet and talk with 이막달 할머니. The film and 이막달 할머니의 story was formative in shaping how I thought about the lasting impacts of the Korean War and division, especially about the impact on Korean women and girls' human rights. 

미국에서 저는 대학 시절, 일본 군인들에게 강제로 끌려갔던 한국의 위안부에 대해 처음 알게 되었습니다. 그 때 김다실 감독의 <Silence Broken: 한국의 위안부>라는 영화를 상영하고, 이막달 할머니를 만나 이야기를 나누는 기회가 있었습니다. 그 영화와 이막달 할머니의 이야기는 한국 전쟁과 분단이 한국 여성들과 소녀들의 인권에 미친 지속적인 영향에 대해 제 생각을 형성하는 데 중요한 영향을 미쳤습니다.

Every halmoni has a different story full of unspeakable violence and disregard for their youth, their humanity, and their lives. It adds an additional layer of violence that they were unable to speak out about the violence for decades due to social stigma in Korean society. The experiences that were forced onto them at such young ages was not a choice~ it was a result of the precarious political, military and economic conditions in Korea at that time. 

각 할머니마다 말할 수 없는 폭력과 그들의 젊음, 인간성, 생명에 대한 무시로 가득 찬 이야기가 있습니다. 그들이 수십 년간 사회적 낙인 때문에 그 폭력을 말할 수 없었다는 사실은 추가적인 폭력을 더합니다. 그들이 겪었던 경험들은 그들이 선택한 것이 아니라, 당시 한국의 정치적, 군사적, 경제적 상황 때문에 강요된 것이었습니다.

I was adopted to the US as a baby. Although I can never know what it was like to endure the sexual exploitation that the grandmothers experienced, I do know what it's like to have my choices about my life taken away, and to be used by Korea due to precarious political and economic conditions in Korea at the time. I also know that the shame Korean society puts on my Korean mother and over 200,000 Korean mothers who’s children were sent for adoption is unfair and must end.

저는 아기였을 때 미국으로 입양되었습니다. 비록 할머니들이 겪으신 성적 착취를 직접 경험할 수는 없지만, 제 삶에 대한 선택이 강제로 빼앗긴 경험은 알고 있습니다. 그리고 한국이 처했던 정치적, 경제적 상황 때문에 저와 같은 입양인들이 한국에서 미국으로 보내진 사실도 알게 되었습니다. 또한 한국 사회가 제 친생모와 20만명 이상의 친생모들에게 부여한 수치심은 불공평하며, 그 끝이 나야 한다고 생각합니다.

I am so grateful to the halmonis who were so brave to share their stories through this museum, and I hope in the future we have a chance to connect further. 

할머니들께서 박물관을 통해 용감하게 그들의 이야기를 나누어주신 것에 정말 감사하며, 앞으로 더 많은 기회를 통해 서로 연결되기를 바랍니다.
